Kemi SnowCastle and the Sampo Icebreaker

Winter Only Pair On The Frozen Gulf Of Bothnia: A Snow Castle Rebuilt Every Year And Cruises On A Retired Icebreaker · Kemi, Lapland

Kemi, a port town at the top of the Gulf of Bothnia, sells two winter experiences that exist nowhere else in quite this form. The SnowCastle, LumiLinna, is a castle of snow and ice rebuilt from scratch every winter since the mid 1990s, with a snow restaurant, a chapel used for weddings, carved ice art and a small snow hotel where guests sleep at below-zero temperatures; its size and design change each year. The Sampo is a real icebreaker built around 1960 for the Finnish state, retired in the late 1980s and bought by the town to take visitors onto the frozen sea. On a cruise of a few hours it smashes through the ice, opens its engine room and bridge, and then lets you float among the broken floes in a survival suit, the part most people remember. People come on day trips from Rovaniemi or stay in Kemi to combine both. The honest caveat: both are strictly winter-only, the Sampo cruise is expensive, ice and weather decide the timetable, and outside the season Kemi is a quiet industrial town with little of this left to see.

Kemi harbour, Ajos, on the Gulf of Bothnia, Kemi, Lapland, Finland

Winter only. The SnowCastle is usually open from roughly late January to early April, depending on snow and cold; the Sampo cruises from roughly late December to mid April once the sea ice is thick enough. Both run on set departure days and times rather than daily fixed hours - check the current schedule. Kemi has a station on the Helsinki-Rovaniemi line and is about 1.5 hours by road from Rovaniemi. Book the Sampo cruise and any snow hotel night weeks ahead in February and March.
