Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park
National Battlefield Park · Kennesaw, Georgia
Nearly three thousand acres north-west of Atlanta preserving the ground where Sherman's advance on the city stalled for a fortnight in June 1864, and where his frontal assault on 27 June was repulsed with heavy Union losses before he simply went round. Earthworks survive in the woods along the ridge. It is also, and mostly, the Atlanta metro's hiking park — the car parks fill with people out for a walk rather than for the battle, which is a fair use of it and worth knowing before you arrive expecting solemnity.
