Kennywood
National Historic Landmark · West Mifflin, Pennsylvania
A trolley park opened in 1898 above the Monongahela at West Mifflin, and one of only two amusement parks in the United States designated a National Historic Landmark. It still runs three wooden coasters built between 1920 and 1927 on their original layouts, a 1926 carousel, and a dark ride called Noah's Ark that has been operating in some form since 1936 — alongside modern steel rides, on a cramped hillside site that has simply absorbed a century of additions. For most of the Pittsburgh region it is not an attraction but an institution, and school picnic days here are a local rite.
