Kent Falls State Park
The Best Known Waterfall In Connecticut, A Series Of Cascades Dropping About 250 Feet In Total Over Marble Ledges In The Litchfield Hills, With A Quarter Mile Stepped Trail Climbing Alongside It · Kent, Connecticut
Kent Falls is the waterfall Connecticut puts on its posters: a series of cascades on Falls Brook dropping about two hundred and fifty feet in total over grey marble ledges before joining the Housatonic, in the Litchfield Hills near the New York line. It is unusually easy to reach - the lower falls are a few minutes walk across a covered bridge from the car park, and a quarter-mile stepped trail climbs the side to the top with viewing platforms on the way - which is both why everyone goes and why the car park fills by mid-morning on an October weekend. The meadow below is laid out for picnics and is the real reason locals come. Out of season the parking charge lifts and the place is close to empty, which is when the falls are at their best. Spring melt is when there is genuinely water coming over: by late August the brook can be a trickle, which surprises visitors who drove up from New York for the poster. Out-of-state vehicles pay a higher seasonal rate, which is the other thing nobody expects.
462 Kent Cornwall Road, Kent, Kent, Connecticut, 06757, United States
Open all year from 8am to sunset. PARKING CHARGES ARE SEASONAL, applying roughly from late spring to early autumn and on weekends either side, with higher rates for out-of-state vehicles; outside that season the park is free. The stepped trail alongside the falls is open in daylight and can close for ice in winter and for storm damage. There are no lifeguards and wading at the base is at your own risk.
