Khao Kho
Highland District Famed For Sea Of Mist Views And The Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaew Mosaic Temple; Phu Thap Boek Lies Nearby · Khao Kho, Phetchabun
Khao Kho is a highland district in the hills of Phetchabun, in the lower north of Thailand, where a tangle of forested ridges rises above the Pa Sak valley. Thai visitors come for the cool air and above all for the sea of mist: on clear cool-season mornings, roughly November to February, cloud fills the valleys below the viewpoints and resorts, leaving the ridges floating like islands. Its best-known sight is Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaew, a hilltop temple where five seated white Buddha images rise one behind another above the cliff, next to a great chedi covered in mosaic of ceramic, glass and stone. The hills also carry a harder history: in the 1960s to early 1980s this was a front line between the Thai state and the Communist Party of Thailand, remembered at the Khao Kho Memorial. Today the winding roads are lined with resorts, cafes, campsites and flower farms, crowded at weekends. Phu Thap Boek, with its cabbage fields and freezing campsites, lies further north, and Nam Nao and Si Thep are day trips away.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the viewpoints and ridge roads are open at all hours, and the sea of mist is a first-light event, roughly 6 to 8 am in the cool season. Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaew has admitted visitors daily from about 7 or 8 am to about 5 pm, with no weekly closing day, but ceremonies may close shrines at short notice; the Khao Kho Memorial keeps roughly daytime hours, with exhibits that may close earlier or on some days. Cafes on the ridges often open only from about 8 am to 5 pm and some close midweek. National parks nearby have daytime gate hours, with last entry in the afternoon. The traps are arriving after the mist has gone, reaching the temple at noon on a hot, crowded weekend, and finding cafes shut on a weekday. Confirm current times before relying on them.
