Kielder Water and Forest Park
Kielder Water, Opened In 1982, Is The Largest Man Made Lake In Northern Europe By Capacity, Set In Kielder Forest, The Largest Man Made Woodland In England. It Lies In The Northumberland International Dark Sky Park (2013), One Of The Darkest Places In England. · Kielder, England
Kielder is a big, empty, wet and rather lovely place: a 1982 reservoir, the largest man-made lake in Northern Europe by capacity, ringed by Kielder Forest, the largest man-made woodland in England, in the hills of Northumberland near the Scottish border. It is a landscape of conifers, water and sky rather than famous sights. The 43 km shore trail suits walkers and cyclists in sections, the Kielder Belle waterbus runs in season (confirm), and Kielder Castle, a Forestry England lodge, is the visitor centre. Its great draw is the dark: the park sits inside the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, and Kielder Observatory offers stargazing events that must be booked well ahead. Expect cold, rain, wind and summer midges. It is remote, so fill the fuel tank and bring food. It suits cyclists, families, and stargazers who plan. A day visit is enough; a clear night is a bonus, not a promise.
Reservoir and conifer forest in the Northumberland uplands near the Scottish border, with Kielder Castle visitor centre, a 43 km shore trail, a waterbus and Kielder Observatory on the hills above, Kielder, England, United Kingdom
The forest and lake shore are open all year, with no gate, and paths can be used from first light to dusk. Kielder Castle visitor centre, cafe and bike hire keep seasonal hours, commonly daily in summer and school holidays and shorter or weekend-only in winter, so confirm times. The Kielder Belle waterbus runs on a seasonal timetable, usually spring to autumn, and may stop in rough weather. Kielder Observatory runs set evening events on booked dates, which sell out, and is not a drop-in. Car parks charge in places. Paths have no lighting, and mobile signal is patchy, so plan to be off the trails by dusk.
