A Short Stop On A Ferry Trip, Close To The Gallipoli Battlefields · Eceabat, Canakkale
Kilitbahir Castle stands on the European shore of the Dardanelles at the narrowest point of the strait, directly across the water from Canakkale. Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror had it built in 1463 to control the passage, as a pair with a fortress on the Asian side, and its heart is a unique stone tower shaped like a clover leaf, with three rounded lobes inside a thick outer wall (confirm). The walls are several metres thick, and from the terrace you can watch ships pass within a short distance of the shore. Inside the walls are small rooms with displays of Gallipoli period objects, weapons and photographs, and the open ramparts look across to the town of Canakkale and its waterfront. Kilitbahir is a short ferry hop from Canakkale and is often combined with a day at the Gallipoli battlefields to the north. The village below the castle has a few cafes and fish restaurants by the water. Confirm hours, fees and ferry times.

The castle is normally open daily or on most days, roughly 08:30 to 17:30 in the warm season with shorter winter hours and a closed day, often Monday, which should be checked (confirm). The ticket desk usually stops selling about 30 minutes before closing. The ramparts and tower stairs may close after rain, in strong wind or for repairs. Small cafes in the village open mainly in summer. Ferries and small boats between Canakkale and Kilitbahir run through the day, and the timetable should be confirmed on the quay.
