Killens Pond State Park

Delaware State Park In Central Kent County Built Around An Old Millpond On The Murderkill River, With A Campground, Cabins And A Seasonal Water Park · Felton, Delaware

Killens Pond is Kent County's main state park, a few miles east of Felton and roughly twenty minutes south of Dover, laid out around a millpond of roughly sixty-some acres that was dammed on the Murderkill River back in the 1700s. It is a family park rather than a wilderness: people come to rent a canoe, kayak or paddle boat for an hour on the pond, fish for bass and pickerel from the banks, walk the Pondside Nature Trail loop of a couple of miles through oak, holly and sweetgum woods, play the disc golf course, and spend a weekend in the campground or one of the cabins. Its big summer draw is the Killens Pond Water Park, a fee-charging pool complex with slides and a shallow children's area that runs only in the warm months. There is no swimming in the pond itself. Paddlers who want more than the open pond can follow the Murderkill River canoe trail into narrower, shadier water. The park charges a per-vehicle entry fee in season, higher for out-of-state plates, and it gets busy on hot summer weekends, but outside July and August it is a quiet, easy place to spend an afternoon.

The park is open every day of the year, generally from about 8 a.m. to sunset, with the campground and cabins open to registered guests overnight; the exact closing time moves with the season, so confirm it before a late walk. The per-vehicle entry fee is collected during the fee season, roughly March through November, at a contact station or by self-pay or annual pass, and is usually not charged in the winter months - confirm current dates. The Killens Pond Water Park is SEASONAL: it opens only in summer, roughly from Memorial Day to Labor Day, often with weekend-only days at the start and end of the season, and it closes for thunderstorms and can close early or reach capacity on the hottest days. Boat rentals are also seasonal and weather-dependent, typically daily in summer and weekends only in spring and autumn, and they stop when wind or lightning moves in. The nature center keeps limited, program-based hours rather than all-day opening. Swimming in the pond is not allowed at any time. Confirm water park dates, rental days and campground availability before you drive down.
