Kimmirut, formerly called Lake Harbour, is a hamlet of about 400 people on Hudson Strait at the end of Glasgow Inlet in southern Baffin Island. It is one of the smallest places in Canada that a visitor can reach by scheduled flight, usually from Iqaluit, and it has no road to anywhere. The hamlet is known for soapstone carving, for some of the highest tides in the country, and as the gateway to Katannilik Territorial Park and the Soper River, a Canadian Heritage River that paddlers and hikers use in summer. Be plain with yourself: this is a small working community, not a sightseeing town. There is no cafe street and no tour desk. Visits, paddling and hiking trips are arranged through the hamlet office and local outfitters, and the weather and the tide decide what actually happens. For quiet northern landscape and serious wilderness travel, it is one of southern Baffin's best starting points.

Kimmirut keeps no visiting hours because it is a living community. The hamlet office, the store and any carving outlet keep their own hours, commonly roughly 9 to 5 on weekdays with short or closed days on weekends - confirm by phone before you fly. River and boat trips run mainly from late June to early September, with the Soper River best in July and August. Winter is long, dark and very cold, with few services and almost no visitors. Walking the shore is free at any hour, and the harbour changes with the tide. Sundays and holidays are quiet.
