Kinbrook Island Provincial Park

A Prairie Lake Park With One Of The Warmest Beaches In Alberta, A Large Campground, Bird Watching, Boating And A Canal Of The Eastern Irrigation District. A Summer Park On Lake Newell, Close To Dinosaur Provincial Park And Brooks · Brooks, Alberta

Kinbrook Island Provincial Park lies on the shore of Lake Newell, roughly 15 km south of Brooks in the dry short-grass country of southern Alberta (confirm distance). Lake Newell is a large reservoir built for irrigation by the Eastern Irrigation District, and in this sun-baked prairie it is a bright, surprising sheet of blue water ringed by cottonwoods, reeds and farmland. The park sits on a low peninsula with a sandy beach, a big campground shaded by planted trees, a boat launch and open lawns, and its shallow water warms faster than almost any other lake in the province, so families come from Calgary, Medicine Hat and the surrounding towns to swim and camp. Birders come too, for the lake draws pelicans, grebes, gulls, ducks and shorebirds that cross the prairie flyway. Dinosaur Provincial Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies within a drive, so Kinbrook makes a good base for a prairie weekend. Alberta Parks sets rates and rules (confirm all dates and fees).

Kinbrook is a summer park, with the campground, beach and park services generally running from about mid May to early September (confirm dates), and the busiest weeks in July and August. Day use follows daylight, and campers follow the check-in and check-out times set at booking. The office may not be staffed outside the season, and winter use is limited to what the plowed road and the weather allow, with the lake frozen and the facilities closed. Daylight lasts past ten in June on the open prairie, so evening beach time is long.
