Kings Beach State Recreation Area
State Park · Kings Beach, California
Kings Beach State Recreation Area sits on the north shore of Lake Tahoe in Placer County, a mile or so from the Nevada line, in the middle of the town of Kings Beach on Highway 28. It is the best-known public sand beach on this side of the lake: a wide strip of pale granite sand facing south, so it catches sun most of the day and the shallow water near shore warms faster than most of Tahoe. There is a pier - confirm its condition and use - and paddleboards and kayaks are commonly rented nearby - confirm vendors and dates. Even so, the lake sits at roughly 6,200 feet and the water stays cold, sunburn comes quickly at altitude, and summer weekends bring crowds and tight parking in town. It suits families, paddlers and people who want restaurants steps from the sand. It is not a quiet wilderness beach, and in winter the sand is empty, snowy and a place for a short walk only. Plan the day around parking, sun and wind, not around solitude.

California State Parks has generally run Kings Beach as a day-use beach open from early morning until late evening, with the busiest hours from about ten in the morning to late afternoon in July and August - confirm the posted hours, whether the parking lot charges a fee and whether a kiosk or a pay machine collects it. Lifeguards, if any, work a short summer season - confirm the dates. Winter snow, ice and storm closures can limit the lot and the pier, and the beach is open to walkers year round in practice, so check the State Parks page and local conditions before you drive up from Reno or Sacramento.
