Kings Mountain National Military Park

National Military Park · Blacksburg, South Carolina

A wooded ridge in the Upstate where, on 7 October 1780, patriot militia surrounded and destroyed a loyalist force in about an hour. Almost no British regulars were present: this was Americans killing Americans, neighbours on both sides, and it was savage enough that the killing continued after surrender was offered. Jefferson later called it the turn of the tide of the war.
