Kinosaki Onsen
Kinosaki Onsen, A Willow Lined Onsen Town In Hyogo With Seven Public Bathhouses Visitors Tour In A Yukata And Wooden Sandals. A Weekend Getaway From Osaka And Kyoto, Famous For Winter Crab And Its Quiet Evening Streets. · Toyooka, Hyogo
Kinosaki Onsen is a compact hot spring town on the Sea of Japan coast of Hyogo, about 2.5 hours from Osaka or Kyoto by the Kinosaki limited express. A willow-lined canal runs through the middle, with small bridges, lantern-lit lanes and seven public bathhouses, called soto-yu, that guests tour on foot in a yukata and wooden geta, carrying a small bag with a towel. Each bath has its own character, from a cypress hall to a rock bath open to the sky; Goshono-yu and Ichino-yu are two of the seven - confirm the full list on site. A day pass covers all seven, and staying guests commonly receive a pass or tag from their inn. In winter the town fills for Matsuba crab, a local luxury served from November. It suits couples and friends who want a slow weekend with no car. It is worth the detour for the bath-hopping and the winter dinner. It is not worth it on a short day trip in busy season, when the lanes are crowded and the baths queue.
Kinosakicho-Yushima, Toyooka, Hyogo, a short walk from Kinosaki Onsen Station on the JR San-in Line, about 2.5 hours from Osaka, Toyooka, Hyogo, Japan
The town is open all day and the streets are free to walk. The seven public bathhouses commonly open from morning to late evening, with each one closing on a rotating weekday, so at least one bath is closed on most days - confirm the schedule. The ropeway to Onsen-ji temple runs in daytime and may pause for maintenance. The town is quiet by about 10 pm. From Kyoto or Osaka, take the Kinosaki limited express on the JR San-in Line, about 2.5 hours; from Kyoto there are also faster Shinkansen and local combinations - confirm. IC cards work on JR lines, but keep cash for shops and some inns. Book inns and crab dinners well ahead for winter weekends.
