Kisatchie National Forest

National Forest · Pineville, Louisiana

Six hundred thousand acres in seven districts across central and northern Louisiana, and the only national forest in the state. The part worth driving for is the Kisatchie Hills Wilderness — sandstone mesas, bluffs and longleaf pine on ground that rises and falls, which is not what anyone expects of Louisiana and which locals call the Little Grand Canyon. There are red-cockaded woodpeckers in the old pine, thirty-one miles of the Wild Azalea Trail, and almost nobody about.

2500 Shreveport Highway, Pineville, Louisiana, 71360, United States

Open year round with no entrance fee and no hiking permit. Some developed recreation areas charge a small day-use or camping fee collected on site; dispersed camping is free. Facilities vary by district and some close seasonally — check with the district offices before relying on any of them. HUNTING SEASONS RUN AUTUMN THROUGH WINTER across most of the forest; wear blaze orange. There are no services, fuel or water within the forest.
