A Small Museum On Kluane Lake With Dioramas Of Yukon Wildlife, Collections Of Kluane First Nation Artefacts And A Large Wildlife Display Including Mounted Bears, Sheep And Birds, Run In A Log Building At Burwash Landing. A Summer Stop On The Alaska Highway, With The Lake And The Kluane Mountains Beyond · Burwash Landing, Yukon
The Kluane Museum of Natural History stands beside the Alaska Highway at Burwash Landing, a small Kluane First Nation community on the shore of Kluane Lake, the largest lake wholly inside the Yukon. The museum grew from a private collection assembled by a local family who ran the trading post and lodge at Burwash, and it now fills a log-built museum with mounted bears, wolves, sheep, moose, caribou and many birds arranged in dioramas that show animals in their habitats (confirm the founding story). Alongside the animals are displays of Kluane First Nation artefacts, tools and clothing, with panels on life on the lake before and after the highway arrived. It is a small museum, open mainly in summer, and a classic road-trip stop between Haines Junction and Beaver Creek. Beyond the windows lie the lake and the Kluane Ranges, with Kluane National Park to the south. Services nearby include a lodge, fuel and a gift shop.

The museum is a seasonal stop, normally open daily from about mid May to mid September with set daytime hours, and closed or by appointment in winter. I cannot give exact times, so confirm by phone before you drive, especially in May and September when staffing is thinner. Admission is charged, with lower rates for children and seniors. The gift shop keeps museum hours. Walking the lakeshore and viewing the lake from the road are free at any hour. The nearby lodge, fuel stop and restaurant keep their own summer hours, and long light in June and July makes late visits possible, though the museum itself closes in late afternoon or early evening.
