Knuthenborg Safari Park
Northern Europe'S Largest Safari Park, Opened In 1969 On A Manor Estate On Lolland, Where Visitors Drive Among Giraffes, Rhinos And Antelope, With A Walk Through Tiger Area And Play Landscapes · Maribo, Region Zealand
Knuthenborg Safari Park on the north coast of Lolland is usually described as Northern Europe's largest safari park: a drive-through wildlife park laid out since 1969 in the historic landscape park of the Knuthenborg manor estate, roughly two hours south-west of Copenhagen. Its owners, the Knuth family, turned an English-style park of old oaks, lakes and avenues into open enclosures where giraffes, zebras, rhinos, camels, antelope and deer graze among the trees, and visitors drive slowly through them in their own cars. Around the drive-through sections are walking areas: a tiger area with raised walkways, a monkey forest, bird and small-animal zones, big play landscapes and picnic lawns, so a family can easily fill a whole day. People come for the space - animals in large, green paddocks rather than cages - and for a very Danish summer day out. The honest caveat: it is seasonal, roughly spring to autumn only, it is far from Copenhagen, and it is built around the car, so visitors without one must plan the trip and the drive-through carefully.
Knuthenborg Safaripark, Knuthenborg Alle, Bandholm, north Lolland, Maribo, Region Zealand, Denmark
Seasonal: the park is usually open daily from roughly late April or May to late October, with the longest hours in the Danish school summer holiday (late June to early August), shorter hours in spring and autumn, special autumn-holiday and Halloween openings in some years, and closed in winter - check the current season calendar and the last entry time, which is well before closing. By car it is about 150 km and roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours from Copenhagen on the E47 southern motorway to Lolland, leaving towards Maribo and driving north to Bandholm. By public transport, take a train from Copenhagen towards Nykobing Falster, change to the local Lolland line to Maribo, then a local bus or taxi for the last roughly 7 km - confirm routes. Tickets are cheaper online in advance; booking is not usually required, but buy ahead on summer weekends.
