Kobe Port Tower, A Red Hyperboloid Steel Tower From 1963 On The Harbour Front Of Kobe, Shaped Like A Drum, With A Viewing Deck And A Rotating Cafe That Was Reopened After Major Renovation. A Short Stop At Dusk, Beside Meriken Park And Harborland. · Kobe, Hyogo

Kobe Port Tower is a red steel tower on the waterfront of Kobe in Meriken Park, opened in 1963 and about 108 m tall - confirm. Its lattice frame curves in at the waist like a drum, a hyperboloid form, so the tower looks light and open from the harbour. Viewing decks sit high up, at roughly 90 m - confirm, and give a wide look across the port, the Rokko hills behind and the bay in front. The tower closed for a long renovation and reopened in the mid 2020s, so check which decks, cafes and shops run now - confirm current attractions. It is a short, easy stop rather than a half day: a lift ride, a look around and a walk back through the park. The best time is dusk, when the city lights come on, and the lit tower is at its best after dark. It suits couples, families and anyone already in Kobe for Harborland or the museum nearby. It is not worth a special trip from another city, and the view is similar to other harbour towers. Meriken Park, the Kobe Maritime Museum and a memorial to the Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995 lie beside it.
