Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem are two islands off the south coast, reached by ferry from Sihanoukville in about 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on the boat. Koh Rong is the larger and livelier. Its main landing, Koh Touch, is a strip of bars, dive shops and dorms with a young party scene, while Long Set Beach and the small Sok San Village offer long white sand and a quieter pace. At night the water can glow with bioluminescent plankton, and the clear shallows suit snorkelling. Koh Rong Samloem is calmer, with Saracen Bay and Lazy Beach as its draws. Electricity is limited on both islands, often generator-run for a few hours, and cash machines are not reliable, so bring cash. The sea is rough in the wet season from June to October, when boats are cancelled and many resorts close. Litter and construction are visible, and growth is fast. Most stays are dorm-style or simple bungalows. The dry season, November to May, is the time to go.

Ferries from Sihanoukville run mainly in the morning and early afternoon, with fewer sailings in the wet season, so confirm the schedule with your guesthouse. Boats can be CLOSED to passengers for rough sea from June to October, sometimes for days at a time. Many bars, dive shops and bungalows on the quieter beaches shut for the wet season, and some are CLOSED between sailings. Generator electricity often runs only from evening to late night. Boat trips for snorkelling and plankton swims are paid and run on demand, usually around the middle of the day and after dark.
