Kok-Zhailau Plateau

A High Green Meadow Plateau Within Ili Alatau National Park Used By Almaty Residents For Walks And Picnics, With Views Over The City And The Peaks. A Local Favourite Rather Than A Destination. · Almaty, Almaty

Kok-Zhailau is a green meadow plateau at roughly 1,700 m above the Medeu valley, inside the Ili-Alatau National Park south of Almaty. Almaty residents use it for weekend walks, picnics and a cooler afternoon in summer, and it gives open views over the city and the snow peaks behind. It suits families, casual walkers and anyone with a spare half day who has already seen Medeu. Be honest about it: it is a local favourite, not a destination in its own right. The meadows are pleasant rather than spectacular, and on summer weekends the paths and picnic spots fill up. You can walk up from the Medeu side on a steep path, or go by jeep or taxi on a rough road if it is open. Weather turns fast, and the gullies cut into the slopes can hold mud, slides or avalanche debris after rain or heavy snow. Worth it on a clear weekday morning; skip it in cloud, when the main reward, the view, disappears and the slopes turn slippery.

There are no posted opening hours, because the plateau is open mountain meadow inside a national park. In practice people go in daylight, from morning to early evening, and you should plan to be back on the lower slopes well before dark. A park fee or checkpoint may apply at the access road, and the rough road can be closed to private cars in wet weather, deep snow or avalanche risk, often from late autumn to spring. Jeep drivers and taxis in Almaty know the current position. Confirm road access and any fee on the day.
