A High Alpine Park Of Glaciers, Lakes And Granite Peaks In The Selkirks, With The Kokanee Glacier Cabin, Trails To Kokanee Lake, Gibson Lake And The Silver Spray Area And Summer Wildflower Meadows. A Hiking And Backcountry Skiing Park With A Short Season And A Rough Access Road · Nelson, British Columbia
Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park is a high alpine park in the Selkirk Mountains of the West Kootenay region, about 30 km north-east of Nelson in southern British Columbia (confirm distance). Its heart is a bowl of granite peaks, small glaciers and blue lakes, with Kokanee Lake, Gibson Lake and the hut at Kokanee Glacier at the centre of the hiking trails. Most visitors arrive by a rough gravel road to a high trailhead and walk upward through subalpine forest to open meadows, where wildflowers bloom in July and August. Snow lingers late, so the summer hiking season is short, and the same terrain becomes a backcountry ski area in winter. There are no shops or services inside the park, only backcountry camps and huts, and weather changes fast at height (confirm access and hut details). Plan on a full day even for the nearest lake, carry food, water and warm clothing, and tell someone your route, because help is far away.
Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park, in the Selkirk Mountains of the West Kootenay region about 30 km north-east of Nelson, reached from Gibson Lake and Kokanee Creek roads; coordinates approximate, Nelson, British Columbia, Canada
The park is open all year, but the access road and trails are snow-free only from about July to early October, and the road itself may be rough or closed earlier or later (confirm). Backcountry camps and huts run in the summer season, and bookings may be needed for the huts and some camp spots. In winter, access is for experienced backcountry skiers with avalanche gear, and there are no services. Daylight is long in July but short in autumn, so plan to start early and finish before dark. Check the park page for alerts on trails, bridges and bear activity before you drive up.
