It is a pedestrian bridge about 390 m long and 173 m above the water - confirm both numbers - opened in 2006 and often described as the highest pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan. From the middle you see the Shindo Falls, a pair of falls often called the twin waterfalls, and a gorge of forest that turns red and gold in late October to early November. The deck sways in wind and moves under other walkers, which delights some and frightens others. It suits sightseers on a Yufuin or Kurokawa trip, drivers and photographers. A crossing takes about 15 minutes each way, and an hour with views. It is worth it in autumn or clear weather. Skip it in fog or high wind, or if you fear heights. Bring cash for the toll and warm layers, because the valley is cooler and windier than the car park suggests.
