Kol-e Hashmat Khan Wetland

Wetland Reserve · Kabul, Kabul

A reed-fringed lake on Kabul's south-eastern edge, below the walls of the Bala Hissar fortress, that serves as a critical stopover on the Central Asian Flyway — storks, egrets, pelicans and flamingos among the hundreds of migratory species recorded pausing here between South Asia and Siberia. A royal waterfowl reserve under the old kings, it was declared Afghanistan's fourth protected area in June 2017, with a birdwatching tower on its shore. It is pressured ground: 2024 reporting describes land seizures and illegal hunting around the lake. A birder's stop, degraded but real.

Open ground, no gates — dawn to dusk visiting by common sense. Migration seasons (March–May, September–November) are the times that matter. Nothing is published.
