Korgalzhyn Wetlands and the Saryarka Steppe

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Saryarka Steppe And Lakes Of Northern Kazakhstan (2008) And A Ramsar Wetland. The Northernmost Flamingo Colony In Asia, Bird Migration On The Central Asian Flyway, And Saiga And Steppe Wildlife. · Korgalzhyn, Akmola

Korgalzhyn is a wide wetland and steppe reserve about 130 km south-west of Astana, part of the UNESCO site Saryarka - Steppe and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan (2008) and a Ramsar wetland. Its lakes, Tengiz and Kurgaldzhino, hold the northernmost flamingo colony in Asia, and millions of birds pass through on the Central Asian flyway. The landscape is flat, treeless and very big. Flamingos are usually seen from roughly late spring to summer when the lakes are filled, but birds move with the water, so sightings are honestly not guaranteed. Reaching the lakes means a guide and a jeep on tracks, and in summer the mosquitoes are fierce. Start at the visitor centre in Korgalzhyn village, which arranges guides and has a guesthouse. The wider steppe is also home to saiga antelope, a conservation story. It is a place for patient birdwatchers, not a quick stop. Take binoculars, patience and a local guide, and treat any flamingo you see as a bonus, not a promise.

There is no fixed gate on the steppe, so access works by arrangement. The visitor centre in Korgalzhyn village normally keeps daytime office hours on weekdays and may open on weekends in the bird season, but times change, so call ahead. Guided jeep trips to the lakes are set up with the centre or a local guide, often starting in the early morning when birds are most active. Roads to the lakes can turn to mud in wet spells or snow, and the reserve is hard to enjoy in the dark. Confirm all times and the day's plan before you leave Astana.
