Kouchibouguac National Park

National Park (Parks Canada) / Dark Sky Preserve · Kouchibouguac, New Brunswick

Kouchibouguac National Park is a Parks Canada park on New Brunswick's east coast, on the Northumberland Strait roughly an hour north of Moncton. Its signature landscape is a line of barrier islands, dunes and salt marsh, reached by the Kelly's Beach boardwalk, which leads to a long sandy shore with some of the warmest sea water in the country. Grey seals and harbour seals haul out on the sandbars, piping plovers nest on protected beaches, and flat forest, bog and cycling paths fill the interior. The park has Acadian and Mi'kmaq history, including a painful expropriation of local families when it was created. It suits cyclists, families with young children, paddlers and birders, and it is flat enough for almost any age. Expect mosquitoes and deer flies in July, ticks in the woods and beach closures where plovers nest. Allow one to three days. Confirm the Parks Canada pass and which services are running.

The park is open year round for day use, but most services run from late June to early September, including the supervised beach, the visitor centre and rental or tour operators. Campgrounds open from spring to autumn, and winter trails depend on snow. Exact dates, daily hours and any beach closures for nesting piping plovers change each year, so confirm with Parks Canada before you plan. A valid Parks Canada pass or day entry is required during the paid season; confirm the current rules and prices. Some boardwalks and trails may close for weather or maintenance, and shoulder-season days can be quiet with few services open.
