Krimml Waterfalls

The Highest Waterfalls In Austria And Among The Highest In Europe, With A Total Drop Of 380 M In Three Steps. Part Of The Hohe Tauern National Park, With A 4 Km Waterfall Trail Of Viewing Platforms, A Waterfall Museum, And A Waterworld Visitor Centre. A European Diploma Of Protected Areas Site. · Krimml, Salzburg

The Krimml Waterfalls are among the tallest in Europe, dropping about 380 m in three steps - roughly 140 m, 100 m and 140 m - down the Krimmler Ache at the head of the Pinzgau valley, inside the Hohe Tauern National Park. The Wasserfallweg, a trail of about 4 km with a climb of roughly 400 m, runs beside the cascades and passes viewing platforms close enough to feel the spray. The Lower Falls are the wettest, so a rain jacket helps. The trail is a real workout: roughly 1.5 hours up and an hour back, with steep stretches. It is a good half day trip from Salzburg or Zell am See. Sunny weekends in July and August are the busiest, and early morning is quiet. After rain the flow is fierce. The falls are open from about Easter to autumn and the trail is shut when it ices in winter. Getting there takes about 2.5 hours by car from Salzburg or Innsbruck over the Gerlos Pass, or you can take the train to Zell am See and the scenic narrow-gauge Krimml Express. Honestly, the Lower Falls are the showpiece; the full climb is for walkers who enjoy effort, not a stroll.

The waterfall trail is open SEASONALLY, roughly from Easter to October or early November, in daylight, with a small entry fee. CLOSED in winter when the falls freeze and the path ices over. The Wasserwelt and Inhalatorium keep shorter seasonal hours, so confirm before you go.
