Kroller-Muller Museum and the Hoge Veluwe
The Second Largest Van Gogh Collection In The World, A Large Sculpture Garden, Inside A Private National Park Of Heath, Forest And Drift Sand · Otterlo, Gelderland
The Kroller-Muller Museum stands in the middle of Nationaal Park De Hoge Veluwe, a privately run park of about 5,400 hectares of heath, forest, drift sand and dunes between Arnhem and Apeldoorn. Both were created by the collector Helene Kroller-Muller and her husband Anton; the museum opened in 1938 and holds the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world - some 90 paintings and more than 180 drawings, including Cafe Terrace at Night, Country Road in Provence by Night and portraits of the Roulin family - alongside Mondrian, Seurat, Picasso and Redon. Around it lies one of Europe's larger sculpture gardens, with work by Rodin, Moore, Dubuffet, Oldenburg and many others. People come for the combination: great art in the woods, free white bicycles to ride between them, and red deer and wild boar at dusk. The honest caveat: it is out of the way, you pay twice (park and museum), the museum closes on Mondays, and without a car or a good bus connection the day can eat more time in transport than in the galleries.
