Kruse Rhododendron State Natural Reserve
State Park · Cazadero, California
Kruse Rhododendron State Natural Reserve is a small, quiet forest reserve on the Sonoma County coast, north of Jenner and near Fort Ross, Salt Point and The Sea Ranch. Its draw is the spring bloom: wild Pacific rhododendrons grow tall beneath second-growth redwoods and Douglas firs, and in a good year (roughly April to June - confirm) the understory fills with pink and magenta flowers. The rest of the year it is a pleasant, shaded walk through damp forest and ferns, with fog dripping from the canopy. There is a small day-use area with trails - confirm the layout - but no visitor centre, no water and no staff on hand. The approach is the narrow, winding Kruse Ranch Road - confirm its condition - and the reserve is remote, so bring everything you need. It suits walkers who like solitude and flowers, not anyone who wants an ocean view, a playground or a long day out. Plan on one to two hours here.

The reserve has no staffed gate, and State Parks has generally treated it as a day-use area open from about sunrise to sunset - confirm the current hours and whether a parking fee or honour box applies. Practical hours depend on weather and light: under the redwood canopy it gets dark earlier than the coast outside, winter fog and rain make the trails slick and the access road muddy, and the bloom itself only lasts a few weeks in spring, so timing the date matters more than timing the hour. There are no services in the reserve at all. Check the State Parks page for closures after storms or fallen trees before you drive the narrow approach road, and leave well before dusk.
