Kuopio and Puijo Tower

Lakeland City On Kallavesi With The Puijo Observation Tower And Ski Jumps, And One Of Finland'S Best Known Smoke Saunas · Kuopio, North Savo

Kuopio is the main city of North Savo in the heart of the Finnish Lakeland, built on a narrow peninsula pushing into the maze of islands and open water of Lake Kallavesi. Its landmark is Puijo, a forested ridge just north of the centre crowned by an observation tower from the 1960s, usually given as roughly 75 m tall, with a revolving restaurant near the top and ski jumps on the slope below. From the open deck the view is the classic Lakeland panorama: lakes, islands and forest to every horizon. People also come for the lively market square and its Art Nouveau market hall, for kalakukko, the local fish-and-pork pie baked in a rye crust, for summer lake cruises, and above all for the Jatkanvuori smoke sauna at Rauhalahti, often described as one of the largest public smoke saunas in the world, with a swim or an ice hole in the lake between rounds. The honest caveat: the city itself is pleasant rather than beautiful, much of it rebuilt in plain modern style, the smoke sauna runs only on certain evenings, and on a grey or foggy day the tower view can be reduced to a white wall.

Puijo tower is generally open daily, with longer hours in summer and shorter off-season hours when the restaurant and deck may keep separate schedules - check the current timetable. The Jatkanvuori smoke sauna is heated only on set evenings, traditionally around twice a week, with extra days in summer and at holidays - confirm current days and times. The market square trades most days, busiest in summer. Kuopio is roughly 4-4.5 hours by train from Helsinki, and Kuopio airport lies about 15-20 km north. Book the revolving restaurant and any smoke sauna dinner package ahead, especially on summer weekends.
