La Boqueria

Barcelona'S Principal Municipal Food Market On La Rambla, Formalised In 1840 And Covered By An Iron And Glass Roof In 1914, On A Market Site In Use Since The Thirteenth Century · Barcelona, Catalonia

The best known food market in Spain, on La Rambla, under an iron and glass roof from 1914. It has been a market on this spot since the thirteenth century, when it was traders selling outside the city wall, and it was formalised into a covered municipal market in 1840. What is inside is the point: whole tuna being broken down, Iberian hams by the leg, mushrooms nobody outside Catalonia can name, live crayfish, and offal counters that assume you know what to do with it. The front third, nearest the Rambla, has become a fruit-juice and paper-cone operation aimed squarely at visitors and is the part everybody photographs; the back two thirds is where Barcelona actually shops and where the good stalls are. The distinction matters more here than anywhere else in the city. Go early, go to the back, and buy something rather than photographing people working, which is the one thing the stallholders here will tell you they are tired of.

La Rambla 91, Barcelona, Catalonia, 08001, Spain

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The structure: the market opens EARLY, from around dawn, and runs to the early evening, but it is a working market and A LARGE SHARE OF STALLS PACK DOWN WELL BEFORE THE PUBLISHED CLOSING TIME, particularly the fish. IT IS CLOSED ON SUNDAYS and many stalls also close Monday, which is the commonest wasted trip. The stall bars keep their own hours. Confirm before going late in the day.
