La Brea Tar Pits and Museum

Natural History · Los Angeles, California

The only actively excavated Ice Age fossil site in the middle of a major city. Natural asphalt has been seeping up here for 50,000 years, trapping mammoths, dire wolves and sabre-toothed cats; more than three and a half million specimens have been pulled out, and excavation continues in front of visitors every day.
