La Posada Hotel
Historic Harvey House Hotel By Mary Colter · Winslow, Arizona
A Spanish hacienda-style railway hotel in Winslow, designed by the architect Mary Colter for the Fred Harvey Company and the Santa Fe Railway, and opened in 1930. It was one of the last great Harvey Houses. It closed as a hotel in 1957, became railway offices and faced demolition, until Allan Affeldt and the artist Tina Mion bought it in 1997 and restored it room by room. Today its tiled halls, gardens, antique furnishings and Mion's paintings make it a destination in itself, and the Turquoise Room restaurant is known across the Southwest for regional cooking. Amtrak's Southwest Chief stops next door, and Route 66 and the Standin' on the Corner Park are a short walk away.
