La Quemada
A Fortified Hilltop Ceremonial City Of The North Of Mesoamerica, With A Hall Of Columns, A Ball Court, A Stepped Pyramid And Long Defensive Walls, Built And Abandoned Between About AD 300 And 1000, With Views Over The Desert Plateau. Associated With The Legendary Chicomoztoc, The Seven Caves From Which Peoples Were Said To Come. Dry, Open And Quiet · Villanueva, Zacatecas
La Quemada is a fortified hilltop ceremonial centre in Zacatecas, near Villanueva and about 50 km south of Zacatecas city, built and then abandoned between about AD 300 and 1000. It rises above the dry plateau with a hall of columns, a ball court, the Pyramid of the Votive, terraces and long defensive walls that circle the hill. It marks the far northern edge of Mesoamerican culture, and the walls suggest that the people here lived with conflict. Some link the site with Chicomoztoc, the legendary seven caves from which peoples were said to emerge; this is legend and an old guess, not a proven fact. A small site museum adds context. It suits history lovers, photographers and anyone passing between Zacatecas and Guadalajara. It is worth the detour for a long look at an unusual northern ruin and wide views; it is not worth it if you want carved stone, murals or shade, because the site is dry, open and windy, and the midday sun is strong.
