Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour
Industrial Heritage · Scranton, Pennsylvania
A working slope entrance into the Continental Mine at Scranton, where a mine car lowers visitors three hundred feet down the pitch into real anthracite workings and a guide — often a former miner or the child of one — walks them through the chambers on foot. Anthracite built north-eastern Pennsylvania, killed a great many of the men who dug it, and had largely collapsed as an industry by the 1960s, and this is the most direct surviving way to understand what the work actually was. The Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum stands in the same park.
