Ladby Viking Ship and Kerteminde

Denmark'S Only Known Viking Ship Burial, The Imprint Of A 10th Century Chieftain'S Ship Kept Inside Its Mound, Near The Fishing Town Of Kerteminde · Kerteminde, Region of Southern Denmark

Ladby is the site of Denmark's only known Viking ship burial: in the early tenth century a chieftain was laid in a warship about 21 metres long, with weapons, horses and dogs, and covered by a burial mound on a slope above Kerteminde Fjord in north-east Funen. The grave was excavated in the 1930s, and the timber had long since rotted away. What survives is the ship's imprint in the earth, with the iron rivets still in place and the iron anchor and chain, kept where it was found inside the rebuilt mound; you walk into a dim vault to see it. Beside it, Vikingemuseet Ladby tells the story, and a full-size reconstruction of the ship has been built nearby. A few km away, Kerteminde is an old fishing town with half-timbered lanes, the Johannes Larsen Museum and the Fjord and Baelt marine centre. The honest caveat: the ship itself is a shadow in the soil, not a wooden hull like Roskilde's or Oslo's. Come for the atmosphere and the story.
