Ladew Topiary Gardens

Botanical Garden · Monkton, Maryland

Twenty-two acres of garden rooms in the horse country north of Baltimore, made from scratch from 1929 by Harvey Ladew — a rich, self-taught, fox-hunting bachelor with no formal training in anything who simply decided to build the best topiary garden in America and then did. The signature is a hunt scene in yew: a fox running flat out across the lawn with hounds and a mounted rider behind it, all of it clipped hedge. The Garden Club of America has called it the most outstanding topiary garden in the country.
