Laeso

Quiet Kattegat Island With Seaweed Thatched Farmhouses, Medieval Salt Boiling Revived At The Salt Works, Wide Tidal Meadows And Sandy Beaches · Byrum, North Denmark Region

Laeso is a quiet island in the Kattegat, roughly 20 km long, about an hour and a half by ferry east of Frederikshavn in North Jutland, home to under 2,000 people. It is known across Denmark for three things: its old farmhouses roofed with thick layers of seaweed (eelgrass), a building tradition said to be unique to the island; the salt works where islanders revived the medieval craft of boiling salt from the salty groundwater, once a major industry that stripped the island of forest; and its langoustines, landed in the small harbours and celebrated in summer. The south of the island is a wide, flat world of salt meadows, lagoons, sandbanks and birds, while the north coast has long, calm sandy beaches. People come to slow down: to cycle between farms, churches and harbours, eat seafood, buy salt and walk into the tidal meadows. The honest caveat: it takes planning to reach, the ferry with a car must be booked in summer, and off season the island is very quiet, with many cafes, shops and guided tours closed.
