Little Visited By Foreigners And Easy To Reach From Leon, Guadalajara Or Aguascalientes · Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco
Lagos de Moreno is a handsome colonial town of pink stone in the Altos de Jalisco, on the road between Guadalajara, about 175 km away, and Leon, about 50 km north-west of the Guanajuato line. Founded in the 1500s as a Spanish frontier town, it sat on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the silver road recognised by UNESCO in 2010. The main sights are a long stone bridge over the river, the parish church of the Assumption with its tall pink facade, mansions with carved doorways and the Teatro Jose Rosas Moreno, a fine nineteenth-century theatre. Local food includes cajeta (milk caramel), fresh cheese and tamales. Few foreign visitors come, so the streets are calm and the people are friendly. It suits history lovers, road-trippers and anyone wanting a quiet day on the Guadalajara-Leon road. It is worth a half-day stop, but it is not a long-stay destination: it has no big museums, and the sights can be seen in a few hours.
