Lahti Sports Centre and Ski Jumps
Nordic Skiing Centre On The Salpausselka Ridge, Home Of The Lahti Ski Games And Host Of Several Nordic World Ski Championships · Lahti, Paijat-Hame
The Lahti Sports Centre sits on the Salpausselka ridge, a long glacial esker that runs along the southern edge of the city, and it is one of the best-known Nordic skiing venues in the world. Its three ski jump towers rise straight out of the town centre and can be seen from much of Lahti. The centre has hosted the Nordic World Ski Championships several times since the 1920s and stages the Lahti Ski Games, a World Cup meeting in ski jumping, cross-country and Nordic combined held most years in late winter. People come for the ski games atmosphere, for the observation deck at the top of the largest jump tower, for the ski museum, for hundreds of kilometres of ski tracks that begin at the stadium, and in summer for the odd sight of an outdoor swimming pool in the landing area below the jumps. The honest caveat: outside the ski games and a few summer weekends this is a working sports park rather than a tourist site, the tower lift and deck are seasonal, and on an ordinary weekday in November there may be little to see beyond concrete, grass and jump profiles.

The grounds, stadium surroundings and ski and walking tracks are open all year, day and night, and free to walk. The ski jump tower lift and observation deck usually run in the warmer months and on selected dates, with shorter hours or closures in late autumn and around competitions - check the current schedule. The ski museum keeps its own hours and is often closed one weekday. Lahti is roughly an hour by train from Helsinki; the sports centre is a walk of about 20 minutes from the station. Book ski games tickets and central hotels for that weekend well ahead.
