Lake Balkhash

One Of The Largest Lakes In Asia (About 16,000 Square Km), Unusual For Being Fresh In The West And Salty In The East, Divided By A Narrow Strait. Smelting And Mining At The City Of Balkhash Affect The Shore; Clean Quiet Beaches Are East And South. · Balkhash, Karaganda

Lake Balkhash is one of the largest lakes in Asia, about 16,000 square km, a long crescent in the dry south-centre of Kazakhstan. It is unusual because the west is fresh and the east is salty, divided by a narrow strait. Be honest about what to expect: the city of Balkhash on the northern shore is a copper-smelting town, and smelting and mining affect the air and parts of the shore, so do not make it your beach. Clean, quiet beaches and fishing spots are found away from the city, usually with a car or a local contact. Expect reed edges, strong wind, mosquitoes in summer and very long drives between points on the map. Birds, fishing, big skies and a sunset over flat water are the real rewards. This place suits road-trippers crossing the country more than holiday-makers, and it is worth it only if the route already passes nearby. Keep your plan modest, carry fuel, water and food, and treat swimming spots as variable: ask locals which shore is clean this year before you settle in.

Huge crescent lake in south-central Kazakhstan, reached by road and rail at the industrial city of Balkhash on its northern shore; sandy and reedy beaches, with fresh water in the west and salty in the east, Balkhash, Karaganda, Kazakhstan

The lake is open at all times and there is no gate on most of the shore, so beaches, fishing spots and viewpoints can be reached in daylight whenever the roads allow. Holiday bases, small hotels and cafes near the water operate roughly June to August, with limited services in May and September, and most are shut in winter. Opening times are not fixed here, so confirm locally. Some shoreline close to industrial sites or border zones may be restricted or fenced, so follow signs and local advice. Wind can make some days unusable for boats or swimming, whatever the season.
