Lake Catherine State Park

Arkansas State Park On Lake Catherine, One Of The Six Original Parks Built By The Civilian Conservation Corps In Arkansas In The 1930s. Its CCC Structures Are Listed On The National Register Of Historic Places. · Hot Springs, Arkansas

Lake Catherine is one of the six original Civilian Conservation Corps parks in Arkansas, built in the 1930s on a narrow Ouachita lake twenty minutes south-east of Hot Springs, and the stone cabins the CCC put up on the shore are still the reason people book a year ahead. The best walk is the Falls Branch Trail, a loop of a mile and a half that ends at a small waterfall in a rock hollow which runs properly after rain. There is a marina, a swimming beach and stables, which is rare in the Arkansas system. It is quieter than the lakes further west and it is close enough to Hot Springs to be a base rather than a day trip.

Open year-round and Arkansas state parks charge no entrance fee. Trails are open dawn to dusk. The visitor centre keeps daytime hours with reduced winter hours; the marina, swimming area and stables are seasonal. Cabins and campsites are booked through Arkansas State Parks and the CCC cabins go many months ahead for spring and autumn weekends.
