Lake Chicot State Park

Arkansas State Park On Lake Chicot, The Largest Oxbow Lake In North America And The Largest Natural Lake In Arkansas A Twenty Mile Former Channel Of The Mississippi River, Cut Off Around Six Hundred Years Ago. · Lake Village, Arkansas

Lake Chicot is a twenty-mile crescent of water in the far south-east corner of Arkansas that used to be the Mississippi River. The river cut the meander off around six hundred years ago and left the largest oxbow lake in North America behind, which is also the largest natural lake in the state. It is Delta water - warm, slow and full of bream, crappie and catfish - with cypress along the margins and a levee road running the length of it. The state park sits at the northern end with cabins, a campground and a pool, and it is the sort of place people come back to every year rather than visit once. The birdlife is the surprise: this corner of Arkansas sits on the Mississippi flyway and the park runs boat tours to look at it. Lake Village on the shore is where Charles Lindbergh made one of his first night flights, from a field beside the water, which is the sort of thing this corner of the state turns out to have quietly done.

The park is open year-round and Arkansas state parks charge no entrance fee. The visitor centre keeps daytime hours with reduced winter hours. Cabins and campsites are booked through Arkansas State Parks and run year-round; the swimming pool is summer only. Park-run boat tours and barge tours onto the lake operate seasonally and by arrangement rather than daily - book them rather than turning up. Confirm before travelling; this is the far corner of the state and nothing else is nearby.
