The Lake District is England's best-known mountain region, in Cumbria about 400 km north of London, a national park since 1951 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017. It has sixteen lakes, steep green fells and stone farm walls, with the highest ground in England at Scafell Pike, 978 m. Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere and Keswick are the main bases. Grasmere holds Dove Cottage, where Wordsworth lived, and Hill Top near Sawrey was Beatrix Potter's farm. Lake steamers cross Windermere and Ullswater, and the walking runs from gentle shore paths to exposed ridges like Striding Edge on Helvellyn. It is also famous for rain, which can arrive any month and hide the views. Summer weekends bring traffic jams and full car parks, Windermere town is crowded and pricey, and a car is almost essential. Mountain weather turns fast and rescues are common, so plan carefully and keep a wet-weather option for every day.
