Lake Harriet and the Chain of Lakes

Lake · Minneapolis, Minnesota

Five connected lakes inside Minneapolis — Harriet, Bde Maka Ska, Lake of the Isles, Cedar and Brownie — ringed by parkways, beaches and a continuous path system, and the single strongest argument for the claim that Minneapolis has the best urban park network in America. Lake Harriet at the southern end has a bandshell that puts on free concerts all summer and a restored 1900s streetcar that still runs a short stretch of the old line. The whole chain is public to the waterline; there is no private lakefront anywhere on it.

4135 West Lake Harriet Parkway, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55409, United States

Open at all hours year round and free — this is a public park system with no gates. Swimming beaches have lifeguards during a short summer season and posted hours only, and beaches close for blue-green algae blooms in late summer; check the Minneapolis Park Board beach status page before swimming. Free Lake Harriet Bandshell concerts run most summer evenings. The Como-Harriet streetcar and boat hire are seasonal. Parkway parking is free and fills on summer evenings.
