Lake Markakol and the Markakol Reserve
Markakol State Nature Reserve (1976) And Its Large Altai Lake, With Larch And Cedar Forest, Taimen And Lenok Fish, And The Markakol Kurchum Track. Remote And Short Season; Best In Summer. · Urunkhaika, East Kazakhstan
Markakol is a large mountain lake at about 1,450 m in the Kurchum district of the Kazakh Altai, inside the Markakol State Nature Reserve, set up in 1976. It is surrounded by larch, cedar and spruce forest, with marsh meadows at the shore and high ridges behind. This is a serious trip, not a casual stop. The usual base is the village of Urunkhaika, reached by a long track from Ust-Kamenogorsk or from the Zaysan side, and the last stretch is rough enough that many people hire a 4WD with a driver. Because the lake lies in a reserve and near the Chinese frontier, you normally need permission from the reserve office and may need border-zone paperwork, so ask well ahead. The season is short: snow lies from about October to May, and summer is the only comfortable time. Services are few, with basic homestays, horses and boats from local families. Fishing for taimen and lenok is regulated, and the best fish are protected. It suits people who already know the Altai and want quiet water and forest. For a normal first trip to Kazakhstan, it is not worth the detour.
Remote alpine lake at about 1,450 m in the Kurchum district of the Altai, accessed from the village of Urunkhaika by a long track from Ust-Kamenogorsk or Zaysan; a border-zone permit and the reserve office may apply, Urunkhaika, East Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan
There are no fixed opening hours for the lake itself, and nothing is staffed like a normal attraction. The reserve office in the area handles permissions and usually works office hours on weekdays, but exact times are not known here, so confirm by phone through a homestay or guide. The practical season runs roughly June to September, when the track is passable. From about October to May snow can block the road and most homestays close. Daylight is long in summer, but weather in the mountains can change within an hour, and there is no lighting or mobile signal you can count on. Plan arrivals in daylight.
