Lake Meredith National Recreation Area
Lake · Fritch, Texas
A reservoir on the Canadian River north of Amarillo, held behind Sanford Dam in a canyon system cut into the flat Panhandle — which is the surprise, because from the highway there is no hint that any of it is there until the ground opens. It is the main open water in the region, it shares a boundary with Alibates Flint Quarries, and its level has swung dramatically over the decades.
419 East Broadway, Fritch, Texas, 79036, United States
⚠ FREE ENTRY — no gate fee. Open year-round; camping fees apply at developed areas. ⚠ CHECK THE CURRENT LAKE LEVEL BEFORE TRAVELLING, because it decides which boat ramps and shorelines are usable and it has swung dramatically over the decades — nps.gov/lamr. ⚠ Visitor centre hours not verified; NPS staffing has affected them across the system. Adjoins Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument and is administered with it. No lifeguards.
