Lake Minatare State Recreation Area
State Recreation Area With Nebraska'S Only Lighthouse (Built In The 1930s By The Civilian Conservation Corps Hedge) · Minatare, Nebraska
Lake Minatare State Recreation Area surrounds an irrigation reservoir in the Nebraska Panhandle, roughly 10 miles north of the small town of Minatare and about 20 to 30 minutes by car from Scottsbluff. Its unusual claim is Nebraska's only lighthouse: a squat stone tower built on the shore in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (hedge), which visitors have been able to climb in the open season for a view over the water, the Scotts Bluff country and, on clear days, far across the plains (hedge - check that it is open). The lake was built early in the twentieth century as part of the federal North Platte irrigation project, and its level rises and falls with irrigation demand. The recreation area has campsites, boat ramps, a swimming beach and fishing, and it lies within a unit of the North Platte National Wildlife Refuge, which is why it closes in autumn and early winter for migrating waterfowl. Be honest about scale: it is a local lake used by Panhandle families, and the lighthouse is a 20-minute stop unless you are camping, fishing or boating.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the recreation area is open daily in the open season, roughly from mid-January to mid-October, with day use from early morning to around 10 pm and camping overnight; the whole area closes from roughly mid-October to mid-January for migrating waterfowl as part of the North Platte National Wildlife Refuge (hedge - check the dates). The lighthouse has been open for climbing mainly in the summer season, possibly with set hours (hedge - check). All times are Mountain time. The traps that ruin a day are driving out during the autumn closure, finding the lighthouse locked, arriving without a park entry permit and finding the lake low in late summer. Confirm current times before relying on them.
