Lake Minnewanka

The Largest Lake In Banff National Park (UNESCO Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks, 1984), A Glacier Fed Lake Raised By A Dam In 1941 That Drowned The Old Resort Village Of Minnewanka Landing. A Cruise Runs In Summer; The Shore Trail Follows The Water For 15 Km. Cold, Deep Water; Swimming Is Not Advised. · Banff, Alberta

Lake Minnewanka is the largest lake in Banff National Park, a long glacier-fed reservoir about 5 km north-east of Banff townsite. A dam raised the water in 1941 and drowned the small resort village of Minnewanka Landing, which still lies under the surface. The lake sits inside the UNESCO Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks site, so a Parks Canada pass is needed to stop here. The setting is the point: a wide blue-grey lake, bare limestone ridges and long shore paths, much quieter than the Banff streets nearby. It suits families, easy walkers, cyclists and anyone who wants a boat cruise without a big outing. The water is very cold and deep, and swimming is not advised. Wind can build fast, and bears and elk use the shore. A quick look takes under an hour; the cruise and a short walk make a good half day. Confirm the cruise season and the current pass fee before you go. Treat it as a calm, scenic stop rather than a big attraction, and pair it with Banff for a fuller day.

Large reservoir lake about 5 km north-east of Banff townsite in Banff National Park, with a boat cruise dock, a day lodge, picnic areas and the Lakeshore trail, Banff, Alberta, Canada

The lake and shore are open all year, and parking is available at the dock area whenever the road is open. Services are seasonal: the cruise runs in summer, roughly May to October, run by a concessionaire, and the day lodge, food service and boat rentals follow the same season, so confirm dates and sailing times before you drive out. The Minnewanka Loop road can close in winter or for wildlife and bear management, so check Parks Canada road reports. A valid Parks Canada pass for Banff National Park is required for any stop in the park, including a short one. In winter the dock is quiet and the lake edge can be icy and windy.
