Lake Murray State Park
Oklahoma'S Oldest And Largest State Park; CCC And WPA Construction · Ardmore, Oklahoma
Oklahoma's oldest and largest state park, about 12,500 acres of oak woodland wrapped around a 5,700-acre lake in the south of the state, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. Tucker Tower, a stone castle-like building on a bluff above the water, was begun as a governor's retreat and now holds a nature centre with a meteorite found nearby. The park has beaches, marinas, a lodge, cabins, campgrounds, an 18-hole golf course, riding stables, mountain bike and bridle trails, an airstrip and the state's biggest off-road vehicle area outside the dunes. Because it sits on Interstate 35 halfway between Oklahoma City and Dallas, it draws weekenders from both, and summer holiday weekends fill every site.
