Lake of the Woods and Kenora

A Lake Of Roughly 14,500 Islands Straddling Ontario, Manitoba And Minnesota, With About 105,000km Of Shoreline More Than Lake Superior And Kenora As Its Ontario Harbour Town · Kenora, Ontario

Lake of the Woods has about fourteen and a half thousand islands and something in the order of a hundred and five thousand kilometres of shoreline, which is more shoreline than Lake Superior in a lake a fraction of the size. It sits across three jurisdictions - Ontario, Manitoba and Minnesota - and the international border runs through it in a way that produced the Northwest Angle, the only part of the continental United States north of the 49th parallel, by way of a surveying error in 1783. For Manitobans it is simply where you go: the cottage country of the prairies, three hours from Winnipeg. Kenora is the Ontario town on the north shore, a former lumber and paper town with a working harbourfront, and the MS Kenora runs cruises out among the islands. What the lake is actually known for is muskie, walleye and smallmouth bass, and for the fact that you can spend a week on the water and not see the same island twice.

Kenora, Lake of the Woods, Kenora District, Kenora, Ontario, Canada

This is a lake and a town, not a gated attraction: THERE IS NO ADMISSION AND NO CLOSING TIME. What is seasonal is everything that floats. BOAT CRUISES, MARINAS, HOUSEBOAT CHARTERS AND MOST ISLAND LODGES RUN ROUGHLY MID-MAY TO EARLY OCTOBER, with the MS Kenora sailing on a published summer schedule from the Kenora harbourfront. ICE COVER USUALLY HOLDS FROM AROUND LATE DECEMBER INTO APRIL and the lake turns into a winter one - ice fishing, snowmobiling and ice roads - with a completely different set of operators and risks. ONTARIO FISHING LICENCES ARE REQUIRED and the regulations differ by zone and by species, particularly for muskie. Kenora's shops, restaurants and the harbourfront are open year-round. Highway 17 runs through town and is maintained all winter.
