Lake Okeechobee
Lake · Okeechobee, Florida
Florida's inland sea — roughly 730 square miles of open water in the middle of the peninsula, and one of the largest freshwater lakes entirely within the contiguous United States. It averages only about nine feet deep, which is why it behaves less like a lake than a vast shallow marsh, and why the 1928 hurricane that pushed its water over the southern rim killed some two and a half thousand people.
